Opt-Out/Waiver

If you do not want the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must decline or opt-out of coverage by submitting a waiver. You may only opt-out of coverage during the following Waiver Periods:

Nursing Students

 Waiver Period
Fall07/13/2026 - 09/11/2026
Spring10/26/2026 - 02/05/2027
Summer03/22/2027 - 05/21/2027

 

All registered, degree-seeking School of Nursing students taking four (4) or more clinical credits are required to have health insurance coverage, either through the Student Health Insurance Plan or through another comparable plan. Students are automatically enrolled in the NSU Student Health Insurance Plan unless proof of comparable coverage is provided by completing the waiver.

 

To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements as listed below.

  1. Be active by the first day of the term you are waiving.
  2. Provide Primary and Emergency Care within 40 miles of the main NSU campus.
  3. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient Hospitalization.
  4. Pay 70% or greater for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health benefits.
  5. Provide Prescription Medication coverage.
  6. Must have a yearly, individual deductible of $4,000 or less.
  7. Must have Fluid Exposure coverage.
  8. Must have Needle Stick coverage.

 

Please note: Pooled gifting plans are not accepted as comparable coverage because they are not guaranteed health insurance plans, examples are:

  • Liberty Health Share
  • Christian Healthcare Ministries
  • Samaritan Ministries
  • Medi-Share

If your private health insurance plan meets the criteria, you are eligible to apply for a waiver of the NSU Student Health Insurance Plan. Have the following information ready before you begin your waiver application.

  • Your medical ID card
  • Your NSU ID number
