Students with a Qualifying Life Event

Opt-Out/Waiver

If you are covered by a comparable insurance plan and would like to opt out of the the Student Health Insurance Plan, you must you must submit a waiver during one of the below waiver periods:

Waiver Periods

Fall: 07/15/2024 - 09/14/2024

Spring: 11/13/2024 - 02/09/2025

Summer: 03/15/2025 - 05/18/2025

All registered, degree-seeking School of Nursing students taking 4 or more clinical credits are required to have health insurance coverage, either through the Student Health Insurance Plan or through another comparable plan. Students are automatically enrolled in the NSU Student Health Insurance Plan unless proof of comparable coverage is provided by completing the waiver.

 

To qualify for a waiver, your health insurance plan must meet the requirements as listed below.

  1. Be active by the first day of the term you are waiving.
  2. Provide Primary and Emergency Care within 75 miles of the main NSU campus.
  3. Pay 80% or greater for Inpatient Hospitalization.
  4. Pay 80% or greater for Inpatient and Outpatient Mental Health benefits.
  5. Provide Prescription Medication coverage.
  6. Must have a yearly, individual deductible of $3,000 or less.
  7. Must have Fluid Exposure coverage.
  8. Must have Needle Stick coverage.

 

Please note: Pooled gifting plans are not accepted as comparable coverage because they are not guaranteed health insurance plans, examples are:

  • Liberty Health Share
  • Christian Healthcare Ministries
  • Samaritan Ministries
  • Medi-Share

If your private health insurance plan meets the criteria you are eligible to apply for a waiver of the NSU Student Health Insurance Plan. Have the following information ready before you begin your waiver application.

  • Your medical ID card
  • Your NSU ID number
